The Guide

Top left text starts here

Here I have two simple columns to split my web page into 67% and 33% so that I can add one large video in the middle, with some text underneath it like this, and on the right I can add three smaller videos or, if I choose, I can remove those videos and place some banner adverts or pictures in their place.

But for some reason, the way I have created these two columns, they seem dependent upon each other. So if I add something to the column on the right it changes the spacing. For example, it often adds a big space at the top of this left-hand column and everything goes out of line. To get it back into line I have to hit the enter button to create lots of space below to push the content upwards. But then the right hand column develops a space above it, like it has now. It's like juggling plates, something always ends up out of sync.

But the worst thing is although this looks good on my wide screen monitor it looks terrible on my 15 inch screen. I have to scroll from left to right to get to see the whole page. Also, the left-hand menu is all squashed up,where as on this site it is stretched out a little too much. It appears the entire outer template is of flexible width and adapts to the resolution whereas the editable HTML area where I add this content isn't flexible, it appears to be fixed width even though I have specified percentage rather than pixel sizes.

Also, I can't seem to go as far to the right as I would like, which is why there is quite a bit of white space on the right hand side next to the smaller YouTube videos.

So I think I need a more stable template built with.....

  • 67% width for the left column and 33% width for the right column.
  • but total width of just 90% to leave some spacing around the edges.
  • I need it to be able to adapt to different monitor sizes and screen resolutions.
  • I need them to be independent of each other so that what I do in one column doesn't alter what has already been done in the other.
  • I want them separated by invisible borders, as they are here.

I can't think of anything else right now that is required, but if you do please suggest it all included.

Thanks.

Oh, here's all that white space below that was created trying to get rid of the whitespace above......
